How To Understand Your Bathroom Remodeling Contractor
Are you planning on a bathroom remodel for your Sarasota home? Taking that room from drab to fab will be a truly exciting experience. Throughout the project, from the initial planning phase to the actual construction phase, many words will be thrown around that you may not be familiar with.
These are the most common words you will come across that you need to know to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Vanities Vs. Cabinets
Bathroom cabinets are where you store your belongings in the bathroom. Similar to kitchen cabinets, they are enclosed with doors. On the other hand, vanities are bathroom sinks and the storage structures around them. All cabinets with sinks are vanities, but all vanities are not cabinets.
A vanity is designed to conceal the plumbing underneath the sink and may offer some storage options. You can choose from various sizes and styles to meet the needs of the bathroom where it’s being installed. For instance, you wouldn’t want a full-sized vanity for a half bath.
Backsplash
You may have heard this term bandied about in the kitchen. However, a backsplash can also be used in the bathroom. As in a kitchen, the backsplash in a bathroom is placed behind the sink and is an extension of the counter up the wall. Its purpose is to protect the wall from accidental splashes of water.
A backsplash can range from a few inches high to covering the entire wall from the sink to the ceiling, typically accenting the rest of the room.
Tile
Tile is one of the most common bathroom floor coverings but can also be used as a decorative wall covering. It comes in a variety of materials, styles, and colors. You will want to find the most water and slip-resistant option to prevent damage and accidents. Tile that absorbs water should be reserved for accent areas only.
Grout
Once your remodeling contractor is done placing your tile and it’s completely set, they will fill in the joints between the individual tiles with grout. Grout is commonly a mixture of cement, color pigment, lime, and often sand, and this combination hardens when mixed with water and left to cure.
Grout provides you with a finished look for your floor or wall, keeps dirt and debris from getting between and under your tiles, and is known for adding strength to your tiles.
Countertop
A countertop covers the top of your vanity around your sink and can come in various options at various prices. Quartz, laminate, stone, tile, and solid surfaces are the most commonly used materials. A pre-cut countertop is cut and ready to go for a sink installation.
Basin And Other Sink Terms
The term basin refers to the part of the sink that holds the water from the faucet, also known as the bowl.
There are three types of sinks you should be familiar with:
- An integral or integrated sink is a sink that is made from the same material as the countertop, and because of its seamless design, it deters mold and bacteria growth.
- A vessel sink sits entirely above the countertop.
- A pedestal sink is a two-piece sink made of a pedestal base and a sink basin.
The faucet mount is the pre-drilled spot for your faucet to be installed and typically comes in two formats. The first is a single hole for a faucet with a handle attached. The second option is three holes for a faucet and two separate handles.
